Amid the borderline-offensive gags and the sacrilegious romance, The Little Hours still finds time to squeeze in jabs at powerful institutions that rely on blind faith. There are plenty of laughs to be had as she and her fellow emotionally unstable novitiates lust after a handsome servant-on-the-run (Franco) and experiment with "partying" - and even witchcraft. She's the biggest revelation here, and she'll leave you wanting more. Plaza brings the same unhinged ambition you might have loved in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and if you aren't already familiar with Micucci's manic brilliance, you're in for a treat. That's the basic premise here, and while it should probably only amount to a decent four-minute sketch, a murderers' row of talent - Brie, Franco, Plaza, Reilly, Kate Micucci, Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Adam Pally, and Jemima Kirke among them - helps this low-budget, Middle Ages-set comedy find legs. Why it’s great: The nuns in The Little Hours are.

Where to see it right now: In theaters on December 1 ( watch the trailer) Gunpowder & SkyĬast: Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Aubrey Plaza, John C. "YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, LISA!" has never felt so. But true to Franco, who exists on the fringes of mainstream (and who it should be mentioned has come under fire over allegations of sexual misconduct), his take on Wiseau is a stark lampoon that defies every imaginable convention. But the sadness of The Disaster Artist is occasionally overwhelming. When Franco's Wiseau rolls up to Los Angeles for the first time, he unloads motivational-poster wisdom when he arrives on The Room set for Day 1, he mutates into a hybrid of masochistic Hitchcock and coked-out Ozzy Osbourne after his fallout with Greg, Wiseau takes on the mannerisms of a 6-year-old.

Franco goes full Daniel-Day-Lewis to become Wiseau, who latched onto his young, acting classmate Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) and drove them both to the hell of inert, overproduced, melodrama-making. Why it’s great: There are no half-measures with Tommy Wiseau, the failed actor/secret millionaire behind the notoriously awful cult drama The Room, and there are no half-measures in The Disaster Artist, James Franco's dramatic telling of the film's bizarre backstory.

A lot of the film's original stars and writers are back, plus some new faces-director Craig Brewer also directed Murphy in the very funny Dolemite Is My Name, which sounds promising.Cast: James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie Eddie Murphy's recent stellar performance on SNL proves he's still bringing the energy in the right comedy vehicle. Of all the potential remakes/sequels this coming year (see also Bill & Ted and Bad Boys 3, among others) this is the one I'm the most hopeful about. Starring: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan

Release date: December 18, 2020, now March 5, 2021 Taika Waititi is never not funny, and it's great to see Killing Eve badass Jodie Comer spread her wings on the comedic side. In this case, he's the timid Guy, forced into action star badassery through a comedy of errors. This movie seems to "get" what makes Reynolds funny by forcing the super-attractive actor into an ugly/schlubby/otherwise incongruous setup.

Ryan Reynolds is always giving it 110 percent. Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Joe Keery Release date: Originally July 3, 2020, now December 11, 2020 ALSO: Dan Levy, post- Schitt's Creek! I cannot wait. A neat little twist on the holiday rom-com, this feels like the movie we need this winter season. I kind of love this concept: A woman plans to propose to her girlfriend at a holiday party, only to realize she's not out to her conservative parents. Starring: Alison Brie, Mackenzie Davis, Kristen Stewart, Dan Levy, Aubrey Plaza It sounds very on-brand for Anderson, is what I'm saying. Oh and it has a whole bunch of his favorite stars in it, including (per the trailer) a naked Chalamet(!!). In this case, we know it's based on the book of the same name: The film's about "an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th-century French city" and it's drawn from stories written in The French Dispatch magazine. I'm a fan of his quirky style, even when he's taking a risk with the material He's not without controversy, but he's imaginative and experimental with his form. If you like Wes Anderson, his latest coming in 2020 promises to be just as Anderson-y as ever. Starring: Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, Léa Seydoux, Saoirse Ronan, Owen Wilson
